Daedalus & Icarus

Famous myths
Daedalus and Icarus

Daedalus and Icarus were famous for many things. Daedalus was famous for his inventions and brilliant mind. Icarus was famous for what happened to him and for just being the son of Daedalus. They are mostly famous for one event that to this day people still remember.
Daedalus was the person who invented the Labyrinth for King Minos, the king of Crete at that time. It was also used for the Minotaur in Crete. He also showed Adriadne how to escape from the prison and how to get away with all of it. King Minos found out about the Athenians knew how to escape. He was certain that it was Daedalus who showed them the way. King Minos then sentenced Daedalus and his son Icarus to Prison.
Daedalus was calm about it. Using his inventor’s mind, he knew that to “escape may be checked by water and land, but the air and the sky are free.” Daedalus then came up with the idea to use wings to escape. They were made of feathers and glue. Daedalus knew that if you were to fly too high the sun would melt the glue, yet if you were to fly too low the damp air would make it loose. He then warned Icarus about it, but he ignored his father. In the result of his stubbornness, he flew too high and the glue on the wings melted. This event took the death of Icarus the son of Daedalus. Where he landed the called it the Icarian Sea. In Greek civilization, when a person lands and drowns in a body of water, they often named it after that person. Hints the reason it is now called the Icarian Sea.
My conclusion about this certain event is that I think it’s awesome that someone could come up with such an idea about trying to escape. I think it’s unfortunate about what happened to his son, Icarus, but he shouldn’t have rebelled against his father. I think it’s pretty cool also, how they named the sea after him. I think that was very respectable of them. To this day people still remember that story all over the world. I know I’ll definitely remember that.
